Format converters with no upload
Each converter decodes and re-encodes the file inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so conversions are instant and private, and they keep working without a connection.
How the converters work
This site turns one file format into another and does the everyday jobs on sound and video: HEIC to JPG for iPhone photos, WebP and AVIF to JPG or PNG, MOV to MP4, audio to MP3, M4A or WAV, compressing and trimming videos, spreadsheets to and from CSV, subtitles, ZIP archives and text encodings.
Every conversion runs in your browser: the file is read and written again on your device and is never sent to a server. That is what makes it workable for the largest files people convert, phone videos and recordings of meetings, which would otherwise take minutes to upload. How fast it goes depends on your phone or computer rather than on a queue; Compress video uses the encoder already built into recent browsers, the one your device records video with.
The free plan needs no account and adds nothing to your files: 3 files per run (more where joining is the point, as in Merge videos), 20 MB per file, raised to 150 MB on the main video and audio tools, and 5 runs a day. Pro lifts those limits, by subscription or as a 24-hour pass.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I open iPhone HEIC photos on Windows or send them through a form?
- Convert them with HEIC to JPG, since JPG is accepted by every program and upload form, or with HEIC to PNG if you need PNG. The photos are decoded on your device. Location and camera details are not carried over into the new file.
- Can I convert or shrink a video without uploading it?
- Yes. Convert video to MP4 rewraps a MOV from a phone as an MP4 in seconds, without re-encoding, and Compress video makes an MP4 smaller for a message or an email limit. Both read MP4, M4V and MOV files, and both keep the video on your device from start to finish.
- How do I get the sound out of a video as an MP3?
- Video to MP3 saves a video’s sound track as an MP3. To change one audio format into another, such as M4A, WAV, FLAC or OGG into MP3, use Convert audio. Converting between compressed formats cannot add quality that was not there, so keep the original if you may need it again.
- Why does Excel show strange characters in my CSV file?
- Usually because the file is UTF-8 and Excel did not recognise it, so accented letters turn into symbols. Fix a garbled CSV for Excel adds the mark Excel looks for, and CSV to Excel writes a proper .xlsx instead. Convert text encoding handles older encodings as well.
- How do I open a ZIP or a .tar.gz file without installing anything?
- Extract a ZIP opens an archive in the browser and lets you save the files inside, including password-protected ZIP files if you know the password. Extract a .tar.gz does the same for the archives common on Linux, and Create a ZIP packs up to 20 files on the free plan.
