How it works

- Pick a bit rate. 192 kbps is a good place to leave music; a lecture, an interview or a podcast is perfectly clear at 64 kbps in mono, which is a quarter of the size.

Frequently asked questions
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. Both halves happen on your device: your browser decodes the video's sound track, and the MP3 encoder runs in this page. Nothing is sent anywhere, and there is no queue to wait in.
- Which files can it read?
- Whatever your browser can play: MP4, M4V, MOV, WebM and MKV in most cases, and the audio formats too if you want to convert one of those instead. If the browser cannot play a file, it cannot read it here either, and it says so rather than producing silence.
- Which bit rate should I choose?
- For music, 192 kbps is where most people stop hearing the difference on ordinary speakers, and 320 kbps is as good as MP3 gets. For anything that is mostly talking — a lecture, a meeting, a podcast — 64 kbps in mono is clear and about a tenth of the size. A higher bit rate cannot add back what the video's own sound track already lost, so there is no point converting a 128 kbps sound track at 320.
- Why is the MP3 bigger than I expected?
- Because the bit rate you choose decides the size, not the video's: a two-minute clip at 192 kbps is about 2.8 MB whatever the video weighed. Mono halves it, and so does dropping to 96 kbps.
- How long does it take?
- A few seconds a minute of audio on a desktop. The page stays usable while it runs — the encoder hands the browser back between blocks rather than freezing the tab — and a long recording shows its progress.
- Can I get the sound as something other than MP3?
- Yes: Convert audio takes the same files and also writes M4A, which is smaller at the same quality, and WAV, which is uncompressed.
- What are the free limits?
- Three files a run at 150 MB each and 10 runs a day, on the free plan. The MP3 carries nothing added: no watermark, no spoken tag, no footer.
