Example

Example: cutting a 12-second goal out of a 58-second phone video

A parent filmed a kids’ soccer game on a phone: goal.mp4, 58 seconds, 1080 × 1920 (upright), 30 frames a second, about 16 Mbit/s, so around 116 MB, under the free plan’s 150 MB. The goal runs from 0:41 to 0:53 and is going to the team’s group chat.

  1. Start at 41, End at 53: the times are in seconds (0:41 is 41), and tenths work too, 41.5.
  2. Resolution: Up to 720p (1280 px). The upright video becomes 720 × 1280.
  3. Sound: Keep the sound. It is copied as it was, not re-encoded.
  4. Trim video: the 12 seconds are re-encoded so the clip starts exactly at 0:41, not at the keyframe before it.
Resolution Picture Video bitrate Video for 12 s
Keep the original (or up to 1080p) 1080 × 192016 Mbit/sabout 24 MB
Up to 720p 720 × 12807.1 Mbit/sabout 10.7 MB
Up to 480p 480 × 8543.2 Mbit/sabout 4.7 MB

goal-cut.mp4: 12 seconds at 720 × 1280, about 11 MB plus the sound. The bitrate follows the original, scaled to the smaller picture, so it looks the same on a phone. Start 41 with End 0 would keep the last 17 seconds.

How it works

  1. Add the MP4 file.
  2. Set the start and the end of the part to keep.
  3. Download the cut MP4.

Frequently asked questions

Does cutting an MP4 lose quality?
Barely: the kept part is re-encoded at the bitrate the video was recorded at, so the difference is close to invisible, and AAC sound is copied sample by sample. It is not a byte-for-byte copy — that would only allow cuts at keyframes, seconds away from where you asked.
How do I cut the middle out of a video?
Keep the first part, then the last part, and join them with Merge MP4 files — or use Split video to cut it into pieces.
Does it work with MOV files?
Yes — MP4, M4V and MOV, which covers phones, screen recordings and most cameras; the result is an MP4. WebM and AVI are not read.
Is there a watermark?
No watermark, free or paid.
How do I enter minutes and seconds?
As seconds: 1:41 is 101 and 2:05.5 is 125.5. End at 0 means the end of the video, and an end past the end of the video is read the same way.
How big a video can I cut?
On the free plan, files up to 150 MB — about a minute of 1080p phone video — and 5 runs a day; Pro has no file-size limit. The cut runs on your own device, so a long 4K video also needs a computer with plenty of memory.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The MP4 is cut in your browser and never leaves your device.
