How it works

Frequently asked questions

Is the video re-encoded?
Only when it has to be. Clips that share the same codec, size, orientation and settings — typically clips from the same phone or camera — are joined by copying their frames end to end: no quality is lost and it takes seconds. Clips that differ are decoded and encoded again at the size of the first clip, up to 1920 pixels, with black bars where the shapes differ; that takes about as long as the videos last.
What happens with the sound?
It is copied as it is, which needs every clip to have AAC sound recorded the same way, as phones do. If one clip has no sound while the others do, joining them would put the sound out of step with the picture, so the tool stops and says which clip it is. Remove the sound from all of them, or join the ones with sound.
Which clips can be joined?
MP4, M4V and MOV, from phones, cameras and screen recorders. Re-encoding clips that differ needs Chrome, Edge or Safari 16.4 or newer; clips that match can be joined in any recent browser.
Is anything uploaded, and what are the free limits?
Nothing is uploaded; the clips are joined in your browser. The free plan joins up to 10 clips of 150 MB each, 10 times a day. Pro removes these limits.
