Example

Example: a 30-second voice memo turned into Santa’s deep voice

A dad records a 30-second message on his phone, “Ho ho ho, this is Santa…”, saved as Santa message.m4a, to play for the kids on Christmas Eve. Settings: Voice effect Deep voice, Save as MP3, Bit rate 128 kbps.

  1. Deep voice lowers the pitch by 5 semitones without changing the speed: a voice speaking around 120 Hz drops to about 90 Hz, and everything below about 220 Hz gets 4 dB more, for the chest.
  2. The length stays exactly 30 seconds. Only echo (0.84 s more) and big hall (1.5 s more) add a tail.
  3. The loudest moment is brought back to the original’s level, never above −1 dBFS, so the lower voice does not distort.
  4. One effect per run: for the elves in chipmunk too, run it again. A run can take up to 3 files on the free plan, all with the same effect.
Effect What happens to a 120 Hz voice Length File
Deep voice 5 semitones down, about 90 Hz30.00 sSanta message-deep.mp3
Chipmunk (high) 7 semitones up, about 180 Hz30.00 sSanta message-chipmunk.mp3
Alien 4 semitones up, about 151 Hz, wobbling30.00 sSanta message-alien.mp3
Echo same pitch, 3 repeats 0.28 s apart30.84 sSanta message-echo.mp3
Big hall same pitch, with reverb31.50 sSanta message-hall.mp3
Robot a 60 Hz hum and a metallic ring30.00 sSanta message-robot.mp3

Santa message-deep.mp3, 30 seconds and about 480 kB (128,000 bits a second × 30 s ÷ 8). It plays on any phone or speaker, and the recording was changed on the device, never uploaded.

How it works

  1. Add one or more audio files — a voice note, a recording, an MP3 or M4A. To record one first, use the voice recorder.
  2. Pick the effect: robot, deep voice, chipmunk, echo, telephone, old radio, big hall or alien.
  3. Press Change voice and download the result as MP3, M4A or WAV, named after the file and the effect.

Frequently asked questions

How does each effect work?
Robot mixes the voice with a low hum and a metallic ring; deep lowers it five semitones and chipmunk raises it seven, keeping the speed; echo adds three fading repeats; telephone and old radio keep only the middle frequencies with a little distortion; big hall adds reverb; alien raises it and makes it wobble.
Does the deep voice sound like someone else?
It sounds like the same voice, lower — the pitch changes but not the shape of the voice, so it disguises a little, not completely.
Does the file get longer?
Only with echo (about a second more) and big hall (1.5 seconds), so the last word’s echo or reverb isn’t cut off. The other effects keep the exact length.
Can I change a voice live, while I talk?
No — it changes recordings. Record with the voice recorder, then bring the file here.
Which files can I use, and how big?
Voice memos (M4A), MP3, WAV and the other audio formats your browser can play. On the free plan a run takes up to 3 files of 20 MB each, all with the same effect, and you get 5 runs a day; Pro lifts the limits.
Which format should I save in?
MP3 plays everywhere. M4A (AAC) is smaller at the same quality. WAV keeps every sample uncompressed and is many times larger. For a voice, 64 to 128 kbps is plenty; 192 kbps and up is for music.
Is my recording uploaded?
No. The voice is changed on your device, in the browser; the file never leaves it.
