How it works

1. Choose the format to save as, and leave "Reduce echo and background noise" on for speech.
2. Select Start recording and allow the microphone when your browser asks.
3. Speak. The level meter shows the microphone is picking you up; pause and resume as you need.
4. Select Stop, listen to the recording, and download it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my recording uploaded?

No. The sound goes from the microphone into this page and is saved on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and the recording is gone from the page once you close it, so download it first.

Should I switch off "Reduce echo and background noise"?

For speech, keep it on: it evens out the volume and removes hum and room echo. Switch it off to record music or an instrument, where the same processing flattens the sound.

How long can I record?

As long as your device has memory for — hours of speech. On a phone, keep the page open and the screen on, because the browser may stop the microphone when you switch apps or the screen locks.

It says the microphone was not allowed. What now?

Your browser blocked it. Select the lock or settings icon in the address bar, allow the microphone for this site, and try again. On a computer, also check that a microphone is connected and chosen as the input in the system settings.

Which format should I choose?

MP3 plays everywhere. M4A is smaller at the same quality. WAV is uncompressed, for editing, and much larger. Every format is saved in mono at speech quality, which suits a voice.
