Frequently asked questions
- What is a bare .aac file?
- An AAC stream with no container around it, usually in the ADTS framing that broadcast and streaming use. It turns up from stream recorders, some dashcams and a few older phones. Because there is no container, a lot of players will not touch it even though they can decode AAC perfectly well inside an .m4a.
- How is this different from M4A?
- Same codec, different wrapper. An .m4a is AAC inside an MP4 container, which carries the duration, the tags and the seek table. A bare .aac has none of that, which is why the length sometimes shows as wrong or unknown before you convert it.
- Does converting lose quality?
- It is a second lossy encode, so a little. Choose a bit rate at or above the source's to keep it from showing; if you do not know the source's, 192 kbps is a safe floor for music.
- Are the title, artist and cover art kept?
- No. The converter works on the sound, not on the tags — the output has no metadata. Add it back in your player or in something like Mp3tag if you need it.
- What are the free limits?
