Frequently asked questions

Why did my voice note arrive as .opus?
Because WhatsApp and several other messengers record in Opus, which sounds better than MP3 at the very low bit rates a voice note uses. Exported to a computer, it lands as a file a lot of players will not open — which is usually why people end up here.
What is the difference between OGG and Opus?
Ogg is a container; Vorbis and Opus are codecs that go in it. A file called .ogg is usually Vorbis, a file called .opus is Opus in an Ogg container. Both are decoded here.
Will it sound worse?
A little, because it is a second lossy encode. At normal listening bit rates it is hard to notice; on a voice note recorded at 24 kbps there is not much left to lose either way. Converting at 96 kbps rather than matching the original avoids adding damage.
Can I get the text out instead?
