Frequently asked questions
- Where do .m4a files come from?
- Voice Memos on an iPhone, most Apple recording apps, and anything that saves AAC in an MP4 container. It is a perfectly good format; the trouble is that older car stereos, some upload forms and a lot of older software only know MP3.
- Is MP3 worse than M4A?
- At the same bit rate, yes, slightly — AAC is the newer codec and more efficient, particularly below 128 kbps. Converting is therefore a small step down, which is why it is worth choosing a higher bit rate than the original rather than matching it.
- Will a protected file work?
- No. Old purchases from the iTunes Store with DRM (.m4p) cannot be decoded and will be refused. Ordinary .m4a files, including everything Voice Memos produces, convert fine.
- Are the title, artist and cover art kept?
- No. The converter works on the sound, not on the tags — the output has no metadata. Add it back in your player or in something like Mp3tag if you need it.
- What are the free limits?
- Three files per run, 20 MB per file and 10 runs a day. Pro removes all three.
