Frequently asked questions

Does this make the video worse?
No, and that is the point. The picture is copied across frame for frame exactly as it was encoded — nothing is decoded and nothing is encoded again — so there is no second generation of quality loss. It is also why it finishes in about the time it takes to read the file rather than the time it takes to re-encode one.
Can I get the sound back afterwards?
Not from the silenced file: the sound track is gone from it. Keep your original if you might want it. If you wanted the sound on its own, Video to MP3 saves it as a file you can keep.
Why not just mute it in my player?
Muting is a setting on your player and travels with nobody. Uploading a clip with the sound still in it means the sound is still there for whoever downloads it — which matters if what was said in the background was not meant to be shared.
Which files does it take?
MP4 and MOV whose picture is H.264 or HEVC (H.265), which is what phones, cameras and screen recorders produce. A file in another picture codec cannot be copied across as it stands; Compress video will re-encode it for you.
Is my video uploaded?
No. It is read and rewritten in your browser, which is also why a 150 MB file is fine here on the free plan when 20 MB is the limit elsewhere: nothing has to travel.
