How it works
- Drop the video. MP4, MOV, WebM and anything else your browser can play works.
- Set where to start and how long the clip should be. Keep it short: a GIF holds every frame as its own picture, so five seconds is a sensible maximum and thirty is the limit here.
- Choose the frame rate and the size. The number is the longest side, so a phone clip held upright gets it as its height, and a clip already smaller than that is left at its own size. 10 frames a second at 480 px is a good balance; drop to 5 and 320 px if the file has to be small enough to post.

Frequently asked questions
- Why is my GIF so big?
- Because GIF is an old format that stores whole frames rather than the differences between them, and it has no real compression for photographic video. Three things shrink it, in order of effect: fewer seconds, a smaller size, and a lower frame rate. A five-second clip at 320 px and 10 fps is usually a couple of megabytes; the same clip at 640 px and 15 fps can be five times that.
- Is there a length limit?
- Thirty seconds, and at most 450 frames, which is what the browser can hold without running out of memory. If you need a longer animation, a short MP4 or WebM is both smaller and better quality than a GIF — most sites that used to take GIFs now take video directly.
- Which videos can it read?
- Whatever your browser can play, because it is your browser's own decoder doing the work. MP4 (H.264), WebM and MOV are read everywhere. Some newer phone recordings use HEVC, which not every browser decodes; if the video will not play in a browser tab, it cannot be converted here either.
- Is my video uploaded?
- No, and for video that matters more than usual: the files are large, uploading one is slow, and a clip from your phone is often personal. Here the file is opened locally and read frame by frame; nothing is sent, and there is no converter core to download either, which is why the page is ready to use straight away.
- Does it keep the sound?
- No. A GIF has no sound at all, by design. If you need sound, keep the video.
- What are the free limits?
