Your files stay on your device
This tool runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and you can even turn off your internet connection before you start.
How it works
- Drop .avif images onto the box, or choose them from your device. Chrome, Firefox and Safari 16 or later can decode AVIF.
- There is nothing to configure: PNG is lossless and stores the decoded pixels and alpha channel exactly.
- Press Convert to PNG. Decoding and encoding run in a Web Worker in your browser.
- Download the PNG files individually or as a ZIP.
Frequently asked questions
- When is PNG the right target for AVIF?
- When the image has a transparent background, when it is a logo, icon, diagram or screenshot, or when you will edit it further. PNG adds no artefacts on repeated saves and is accepted by every editor, office suite and upload form.
- Are my files uploaded?
- No. The AVIF is decoded by your browser and written as PNG on your device. The tool works offline once the page is open.
- Is transparency kept?
- Yes. AVIF supports an alpha channel and PNG does too, so transparent regions stay transparent. Converting to JPG would fill them with white.
- Why does my browser refuse the AVIF file?
- AVIF decoding needs Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari 16 or later. Older browsers cannot read the format at all; update the browser and try again.
- Why is the PNG so large?
- AVIF is one of the most efficient lossy formats, while PNG is lossless. A 200 KB AVIF can easily become a 5 MB PNG. If size matters more than exactness, use AVIF to JPG.
- What are the free limits?
- The free plan allows 3 files per run, 20 MB per file and 10 runs per day. Pro removes these limits.
