Example
Example: “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” on the computer keyboard
As the page opens, Q plays middle C (C4) and the top letter row runs up from there, so this tune needs only one row of keys.
- First half: Q Q T T Y Y T — C C G G A A G.
- Second half: R R E E W W Q — F F E E D D C.
- Press Space once to let the notes ring into each other and again to stop, or hold Shift as a sustain pedal.
| Note | Computer key | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| C4 (middle C) | Q | 261.63 Hz |
| D4 | W | 293.66 Hz |
| E4 | E | 329.63 Hz |
| F4 | R | 349.23 Hz |
| G4 | T | 392.00 Hz |
| A4 | Y | 440.00 Hz |
The tune uses six white keys, from middle C up to A4, the 440 Hz tuning note. Set Note names to Computer keys to see each letter on its piano key while you learn.
How it works
- Click or tap the keys — several fingers play a chord, sliding plays a glissando.
- Or use the computer keyboard: Z X C V B N M play the white keys from C, S D G H J the black ones; Q W E R T Y U I play the octave above, with 2 3 5 6 7 as black keys.
- Choose 25 to 88 keys, the note names (C D E or Do Re Mi) and the sound; Space turns the sustain on and off, and holding Shift works as the pedal.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I play the piano with my computer keyboard?
- The bottom letter row is one octave (Z = C) and the top letter row the next (Q = C), with the black keys on the row above each. The keys follow their position, so it works the same on QWERTY, QWERTZ and AZERTY keyboards. ← and → move the octave.
- Where is middle C?
- Marked with a dot: C4, the key the keyboard scrolls to when the page opens (Q on the computer keyboard).
- Can I see the note names?
- Yes: letters (C D E F G A B), Do Re Mi, or the computer key on each piano key — handy for playing along with a tutorial.
- Why is there no sound?
- Browsers hold back sound until you touch the page; tap a key or the Tap to start sound button. On a phone, also check the silent switch and the volume.
- What frequency is middle C?
- About 261.63 Hz. The keys are tuned in equal temperament to A4 = 440 Hz, each semitone a twelfth root of 2 higher: C5 is 523.25 Hz, and A0, the lowest of 88 keys, is 27.5 Hz.
- How many keys does it have?
- Choose 25, 37, 49, 61 or 88. The 88 run from A0 to C8 like a full-size piano; 25 keys span C3 to C5, two octaves around middle C.
- Is it recorded or uploaded?
- No. The sound is made in your browser as you play; nothing is recorded or sent.
