White noise
A steady hush for sleep, study and small babies.

How it works
- Choose white, pink or brown noise and press Play (or the space bar).
- Set the volume low — just loud enough to cover other sounds.
- Set the sleep timer if you like: the noise fades out over the last minute and stops.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between white, pink and brown noise?
- White noise has equal energy at every frequency and sounds like a hiss. Pink noise falls by 3 dB per octave — softer, like steady rain. Brown noise falls by 6 dB per octave — a deep rumble, like a waterfall or an aircraft cabin.
- Which is best for sleep?
- It is personal. Many people find brown or pink noise gentler than white; white masks voices and sudden noises best. Try each at a low volume.
- Does it keep playing with the screen off?
- On most phones and computers, yes: the sound keeps going in the background and the lock screen shows play and pause. Some phones pause web audio after a long time locked; plug the phone in and leave the page open for a full night.
- Is it safe for a baby?
- Keep it quiet and away from the cot: paediatric advice is to stay below about 50 dB (a quiet conversation) at the baby’s ear, with the speaker at least 2 metres away, and to use the sleep timer rather than playing all night.
- Does it use data or record anything?
- No. The noise is made in your browser as it plays — no audio file is downloaded and nothing is recorded.
