Example
A cannonball into the backyard pool, filmed at 60 fps, as a boomerang MP4 and GIF
cannonball.mov is a 12-second clip from a phone, 1920 × 1080 at 60 frames a second, and the splash comes right at the end. Settings: Start at 0:10.5, Length 2 seconds, Back-and-forths 3, Speed Faster (1.5×), Save as MP4 video.
- Two seconds from 0:10.5 would run past the end of the clip, so the start is moved back to 0:10.0 and the stretch from 0:10.0 to 0:12.0 is used.
- The 60 fps source is written at 30 fps, every other frame: 60 frames of the splash, scaled so the long side is 1080 pixels, 1080 × 608.
- At 1.5× each sweep takes 1.33 seconds instead of 2, and the frame at each turn is not shown twice: 235 frames, about 7.8 seconds for three forward-and-backs, with no sound.
| Save as | Size | Frames per second | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| MP4 video | 1080 × 608 | 30 | about 7.8 s: 3 forward-and-backs |
| GIF | 480 × 270 | 20 | 2.6 s: one forward-and-back, repeating forever |
cannonball-boomerang.mp4, with the note “0:10.0–0:12.0 · 1080×608 · 30 fps · No sound: a boomerang is silent.” For a group chat, the GIF loops by itself: “0:10.0–0:12.0 · 480×270 · One forward-and-back that repeats forever.”
How it works
- Add a video — MP4, MOV from a phone, or WebM.
- Set where the moment starts (for example 0:04) and how long it is: 1 to 3 seconds works best.
- Choose the speed and MP4 or GIF, press Make boomerang and download the clip.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a boomerang video?
- A very short clip that plays forward, then backward, then forward again — a jump, a splash or a toast that bounces back and forth.
- Why is there no sound?
- Sound played backwards is only noise, so a boomerang is silent by design — both the MP4 and the GIF.
- MP4 or GIF?
- MP4 keeps full quality — up to 1080 px at 30 fps — and plays the back-and-forth 2 to 6 times. The GIF is smaller (up to 480 px), holds one back-and-forth and repeats forever, which suits chats and web pages.
- What if my start is too close to the end?
- The start is moved back so the full length still fits; a video shorter than the length is used whole.
- Can I use a 60 fps or 4K video?
- Yes. A 60 fps clip is written at 30 frames a second, keeping every other frame, and the picture is scaled so its long side is at most 1080 pixels for the MP4 and 480 for the GIF. Only the 1 to 3 seconds you choose are kept in memory, so a long video is fine as long as the file is within the size limit.
- How long will the boomerang be?
- One forward-and-back lasts twice the length divided by the speed: 2 seconds at 1.5× makes about 2.7 seconds. The MP4 repeats that 2 to 6 times, so 3 times makes about 8 seconds; the GIF holds one and loops it forever.
- Is my video uploaded, and what are the free limits?
- No. It is read and encoded in your browser; it never leaves your device. The free plan takes one video of up to 150 MB per run and 5 runs a day; Pro removes these limits.
