Extract a ZIP file

How it works

1. Drop the ZIP file, or several of them.
2. If the ZIP has a password, type it in the Password box.
3. Press Extract files. The archive is read in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
4. Download the files one by one, or all of them at once. A file that was in a folder keeps that folder in its name, and downloading them all as one archive puts the folders back.

Frequently asked questions

Does the archive get uploaded?

No. It is opened in your browser and the files come straight back to you. A ZIP someone sent you is exactly the kind of thing worth not handing to a website: it may hold anything from payslips to a whole project.

Can it open a password-protected ZIP?

Yes, if you know the password: type it in the Password box before extracting. Both kinds are read, the classic ZIP encryption and the AES-256 that 7-Zip and WinZip write, and the password never leaves your browser. There is no way to recover a forgotten one here. A wrong password is reported as such rather than giving you damaged files.

What happens to the junk macOS puts in archives?

It is left out. A ZIP made on a Mac usually carries a __MACOSX folder, ._ shadow files and .DS_Store, and Windows adds Thumbs.db and desktop.ini. None of those is your file, so none of them is in the results.

Why are some file names inside the ZIP garbled?

A ZIP made by an older Windows stores names in the code page of that country (Shift_JIS in Japan, for instance) without saying so, and many unzip programs guess wrong. This page reads names as UTF-8 when they are, and otherwise in the code page most likely for the language you are using the site in, so most archives come out with the right names. If one still looks wrong, open this page in the language of the person who made the ZIP (the Japanese page reads Shift_JIS, the Korean one EUC-KR). The contents of the files are never affected.

Is it safe to open a ZIP from someone I do not know?

Opening it here does not run anything: the files are read as data and handed to you as downloads, so nothing inside the archive can execute in your browser. What you do with the files afterwards is the part to be careful about; a .exe or a macro-enabled document is no safer for having come out of a ZIP.

How large a ZIP can it open?

The free plan allows 3 files per run at 20 MB each and 10 runs per day; Pro removes those limits. Past that, the limit is your browser's memory: the archive and its contents are held there while it works, so a very large archive is better opened on a desktop than a phone.
