Frequently asked questions

Why does Windows say it cannot open this ZIP?
It was probably locked with AES-256, which is stronger than the classic ZIP encryption and which the unzip built into Windows does not read. This page reads both, so there is nothing to install.
Is the password or the ZIP uploaded?
No. Everything is decrypted inside your browser, and neither the ZIP, the password nor the files leave your device.
It says the password is wrong, but I typed what I was sent.
Check upper and lower case, and that no space slipped in at the start or end when copying. Look-alike characters such as 0 and O, or l and 1, are the usual culprits. If the sender typed a password with accented or Japanese characters, their program may have encoded it differently; ask for a new ZIP with a plain password.
Can it open a ZIP whose password I do not know?
No. This page opens ZIPs with their password; it does not guess or break them.
Are the file names shown correctly?
Yes, in almost all cases. Names written as UTF-8 are read as such, and names from an older Windows are read in the code page of the language you use the site in.
