Frequently asked questions

Why will my browser not show a TIFF?

Because no browser supports it. TIFF is a container with dozens of internal variations — different compressions, bit depths and byte orders — and browsers never took it on. That is why a scanner or a fax gateway that outputs TIFF leaves you needing a converter.

What happens to a multi-page TIFF?

Each page becomes its own image, numbered in order. Multi-page TIFFs come from scanners and fax systems, and are the main reason a single file refuses to open anywhere.

Will it lose quality?

Converting to JPG does, because JPG is lossy — at the default setting that is invisible for a photograph and can show as faint shadows around text on a scan. Choose PNG if the TIFF holds scanned documents or line art and you want it exact.

Which TIFFs does it handle?

The ordinary ones: uncompressed, LZW, packbits, and the black-and-white fax compressions, in either byte order. A few exotic variants — some JPEG-in-TIFF files, and 32-bit float scientific images — will not open, and it says so rather than producing a black rectangle.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser — the files never leave your computer.
