Example
Example: an 8.4-second clip looped to one minute for a shop-window TV
A bakery wants its cupcake-frosting clip to fill a minute on the TV in its window, which plays a USB stick but won’t repeat one short file. frosting.mp4 is 8.4 seconds from a phone: 30 frames a second, AAC sound, 20 MB, recorded without B-frames, so it can be cut at any frame. Choose “Until a length” and type 1:00.
- Seven whole plays make 58.8 seconds and the eighth is cut after 1.2 seconds. The note reads “7 × 0:08.4 + 0:01.2 = 1:00.0 · Copied frame for frame, not re-encoded.”
- Nothing is encoded again, so the file is the clip about seven times over, roughly 143 MB, and it is ready in about the time the file takes to read.
- For three minutes type 3:00: 21 plays and 3.6 seconds, about 429 MB. Five minutes would be about 714 MB, and the page refuses it as more than the 512 MB a browser tab can build.
| Repeat | You choose | The note says | File, about |
|---|---|---|---|
| A number of times | 3× | 3 × 0:08.4 = 0:25.2 | 60 MB |
| A number of times | 10× | 10 × 0:08.4 = 1:24.0 | 200 MB |
| Until a length | 0:30 | 3 × 0:08.4 + 0:04.8 = 0:30.0 | 71 MB |
| Until a length | 1:00 | 7 × 0:08.4 + 0:01.2 = 1:00.0 | 143 MB |
| Until a length | 3:00 | 21 × 0:08.4 + 0:03.6 = 3:00.0 | 429 MB |
| Until a length | 5:00 | Refused: about 714 MB | — |
frosting-loop.mp4 runs exactly one minute at the clip’s own quality, its sound back in step at the start of every repeat, so the window shows the frosting for a full minute before the TV moves on to its next file.
How it works
- Add one or more MP4 or MOV videos.
- Choose how many times to repeat it, or a length such as 1:00 or 1:00:00 — the last repeat is cut to fit.
- Press Loop video and download the file named with “-loop”.
Frequently asked questions
- Does looping lower the quality?
- No. The frames are copied as they are, not encoded again, so the loop looks exactly like the original — and it takes a moment, not minutes.
- Does the sound stay in sync?
- Yes — each repeat starts its sound with its picture, and nothing drifts, however many repeats. Sound in a format other than AAC can’t be copied into an MP4 and is left out, with a note.
- How exact is the length?
- The last repeat is cut at the nearest frame that can be cut without re-encoding; the note shows the exact length, usually within a frame or two.
- Is there a limit?
- Up to two hours, and the file must stay under about 512 MB because it is made in your browser’s memory — at a typical phone bitrate that is several minutes.
- Can I loop a video for an hour?
- Type 1:00:00 under “Until a length”, but the loop is copied, not compressed again, so it is as big as the clip times the repeats. An hour of a 20 MB, 8.4-second phone clip would be about 8,571 MB and is refused before anything starts; an hour fits under the roughly 512 MB only for a video of about 1.2 Mbit/s or less, so compress the clip first.
- Will the video loop forever?
- No. A video file has an end: the loop is the clip played the number of times you chose, one after another, in one MP4. For a screen that should keep going, choose a long length, or set the player itself to repeat.
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. It is looped in your browser and never leaves your device.
