Example
Example: tuning a violin to A = 442 Hz for an orchestra
The orchestra tunes to 442 Hz, so choose 442 Hz (many orchestras) as the reference. Every string moves up with it, by about 8 cents.
- Tune the A first: bowed at 440 Hz with the 442 reference, the needle reads −8 cents, “Too low — tighten”.
- A D at 293 Hz reads −12 cents against 442 (−4 against 440): bring it up with the fine tuner until “In tune” lights, within ±3 cents.
- Tap a string on screen to hear its note for two seconds and tune to it by ear.
| String | At 440 Hz | At 442 Hz | At 415 Hz (baroque) |
|---|---|---|---|
| G3 | 196.00 Hz | 196.89 Hz | 184.86 Hz |
| D4 | 293.66 Hz | 295.00 Hz | 276.98 Hz |
| A4 | 440.00 Hz | 442.00 Hz | 415.00 Hz |
| E5 | 659.26 Hz | 662.25 Hz | 621.80 Hz |
All four strings end up about 8 cents above 440 pitch, with the orchestra. For practice at home, set the reference back to 440 Hz.
How it works
- Choose the reference A: 440 Hz, or 442 Hz if your orchestra tunes higher. Press Start tuner and allow the microphone.
- Bow or pluck one string: the needle shows how far it is from the note.
- Use the fine tuners for small changes and the pegs for large ones, until “In tune” lights up.
Frequently asked questions
- What are the violin string notes?
- G3 D4 A4 E5, a fifth apart. The A is tuned first, then the others.
- Should I tune to 440 or 442 Hz?
- To whatever your teacher or ensemble uses: 440 Hz is the international standard, many European orchestras tune to 442 or 443, and baroque ensembles often to 415.
- Why does the tuner not hear anything?
- The browser needs permission to use the microphone — press Start and allow it, or check the icon next to the address bar. Play one string at a time, close to the phone or laptop, in a quiet room.
- Does it work for viola or cello?
- Choose the chromatic page: it reads any note — viola C3 G3 D4 A4, cello C2 G2 D3 A3.
- What frequencies are the violin strings?
- At A4 = 440 Hz: G3 196 Hz, D4 293.66 Hz, A4 440 Hz and E5 659.26 Hz. At 442 Hz each is about 8 cents higher: 196.89, 295, 442 and 662.25 Hz.
- Why does my A show −8 cents?
- The reference is set to 442 Hz and your A is at 440 Hz, which is about 8 cents lower. If your teacher tunes to 440, choose 440 Hz and the same A reads 0.
- Is my playing recorded?
- No. The sound is analysed in your browser as it comes in and is never recorded or uploaded.
