Webcam test

See yourself as the call will — before the call.

Nothing leaves your device

This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you type, play or record here stays on your device: nothing is uploaded or saved on a server.

Example

Example: checking a laptop webcam before a video interview

Ten minutes before the call, open the page in the browser you will use for it, press Start and allow the camera and the microphone.

  1. The preview appears mirrored, with Resolution 1280 × 720 and a frame rate of about 30 under it: an HD (720p) camera that works.
  2. With the ceiling light off and a window behind you, the face goes dark and the frame rate can fall towards 15: the camera holds each frame longer to gather light.
  3. Turn to face the window or a lamp: the rate climbs back to about 30 and the face shows detail.
  4. Say a few words: the level meter moves, so the microphone is heard too.
  5. Take a snapshot to check the framing at full resolution.

The camera delivers 1280 × 720 at 30 frames a second; what needed changing was the light, not the camera. If the rate stays low in good light, close other programs that may be using the camera and press Start again.

How it works

  1. Press Start and allow the camera (and microphone) when the browser asks.
  2. Check the preview, the resolution and the frame rate; pick another camera from the list if you have several.
  3. Take a snapshot to see a still at full resolution, and save it as PNG if you like.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my webcam not working?
The browser may not be allowed to use it (see the camera icon next to the address bar), another program may have it open, or a privacy shutter or switch may be closed. The test shows which error the browser reports.
What resolution does my webcam have?
The test shows the resolution the camera actually delivers to the browser, up to 1920 × 1080, and the frame rate it is running at. Poor light often makes cameras drop to a lower frame rate.
Why is the picture mirrored?
Like a mirror, so moving right moves right on screen — the way most video-call apps show you to yourself. Others see you unmirrored. Switch mirroring off to see what they see.
Does it test the microphone too?
Yes: if the camera has a microphone, or one is connected, a small level meter moves when you speak.
Why is my webcam frame rate low?
The rate shown is counted from the frames the browser actually receives each second. Most webcams slow down in dim light to expose each frame longer — 30 can fall to 15 — so more light on your face usually fixes it. A busy computer can lower it too.
Is the snapshot saved mirrored?
Yes, when the preview is: the still matches what you see. Turn Mirror off before taking it to save the picture the way others see you. It is saved as a PNG named with the date and time, such as webcam-snapshot-2026-10-16-093015.png.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The preview and snapshot stay in your browser; nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.
