How it works

  1. Drop the CSV or text file.
  2. Check that the target is Shift_JIS. If the system asks for Windows line breaks, set Line breaks to CRLF.
  3. Press Convert to Shift_JIS. The current encoding is detected for you.
  4. Download the file. If any character had no place in Shift_JIS, it is listed next to the file: fix it in the original and convert again.

Frequently asked questions

Who still needs Shift_JIS?
Many Japanese business systems: accounting software, bank transfer uploads, online-shop and delivery-service imports. Given UTF-8, they show names and addresses garbled or reject the file.
What happens to characters Shift_JIS lacks?
They become a question mark and are listed next to the file. Emoji and some rare kanji are the usual ones. Characters Windows has, such as circled numbers and the IBM kanji, convert as they are.
What about the wave dash and minus typed on a Mac?
A Mac and Windows store 〜 and − as different characters, and the Mac ones have no place in Shift_JIS. The page writes them as the Windows characters for the same marks, so they do not turn into question marks.
